History
Syntaxin was founded in November 2005 through spin-out of intellectual property and scientists from the UK's Health Protection Agency (HPA).
Syntaxin has unique expertise and proprietary technology in the design and development of a new class of biopharmaceuticals termed Targeted Secretion Inhibitors (TSI), based on expertise in engineered botulinum toxins. TSI are novel recombinant proteins designed to specifically target defined cells and inhibit secretion from those cells in order to treat a medical condition where that secretion is involved.
The Company benefits from over 15 years of research in the field of bacterial toxin engineering, and has an extensive portfolio of patents protecting its technology. Syntaxin’s corporate base is a modern laboratory and office facility located in Abingdon, UK.
The Company completed a £6m Series A financing with Abingworth in November 2005, and a £16m Series B financing led by SR One and Life Science Partners in October 2007, with Abingworth, Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation and Quest for Growth co-investing. In October 2010, a Series C round raised £18m and included participation from existing investors Abingworth, SR One, LSP, Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation, Quest for Growth, and new investors Ipsen, Lundbeckfond Ventures and Seventure. The funds will enable Syntaxin to maximise the potential of its innovative Targeted Secretion Inhibitor (TSI) technology platform, as well as take its lead internal Acromegaly programme into proof-of-concept studies.
The Company benefits from an exclusive strategic alliance with Allergan Inc., for application of its TSI in the field of human pain. Phase I studies, led by Allergan, have been completed and Phase II trials in post-herpetic neuralgia commenced in July 2010.
